Liquid Junction Potentials

Solutions of different concentrations, or those containing different substances, when in contact across a junction, develop a potential across the interface called a junction potential. As previously discussed this concentration-potential results from different ions having different migrating rates due to their size, weight and shape differences. Such potentials develop across all solution interfaces and will depend on ionic mobility’s and the concentration gradients.

Although junction potentials cannot be eliminated, as already stated, employing a concentrated electrolyte solution in the form of a salt bridge connecting the two cells can minimize them.
