Diamagnetism. Like paramagnetic substances, diamagnetic substances only exhibit magnetic properties when situated in a magnetic field but, in contrast to paramagnetic substances, the substance is repelled by the external magnetic field. Diamagnetic effects are normally weak but most substances exhibit some diamagnetic properties. However, the diamagnetic properties are often obscured by other, stronger magnetic properties.
