Thermo-Magnetometry Apparatus

The apparatus used for thermo-magentometry is basically a modified form of that used for thermo-gravimetric measurements. The equipment amounts to a thermo-gravimetric instrument fitted with a means of applying a strong magnetic field round the sample (the field strength may be of the order of 10,000 Gauss). The sample crucible must have a very low magnetic succeptability (not be effected by the magnetic field) and, consequently, is normally made of quartz. While the magnetic field is present the recorded mass will be the sum of the actual sample weight and the magnetic force on the sample resulting from the magnetic field. When the field is arrested then the weight will be the true weight of the sample. Thus, by difference the strength of the magnetic effect can be determined.
