Electrolytic Cell
Electrolytic Cell. The electrolytic cell is a device where chemical changes are made to take place by means of electrical energy (e.g. copper sulfate is changed into copper and sulfuric acid by means of an electric current.) The electrolytic cell comprises a vessel containing an electrolyte in which there are two or more conducting electrodes (the anode and the cathode). The electrodes are connected to a direct current power supply. The electrolyte may be a solution or may take the form of a fused salt. The electrolytic cell employs electrical energy to produce chemical energy. When the converse applies and the cell produces electrical energy from chemical energy the cell is no longer called an electrolytic cell but is called a galvanic cell.
