Electrolyte
Electrolyte. An
electrolyte is an electrically conductive medium through which the transport of
electricity is brought about by the transfer of charged entities call ions. The
charge on the ion may be negative (i.e.
and anion) or it may be positive (i.e. a cation) An ion can
contain more than one charge and some, namely polyelectrolytes may contain multiple charges. Electrolytes are sometimes referred
to as ionic solutions but electrolytes can also occur as fused salts and need
not necessarily constitute a solution.
