Electrochemistry
Electrochemistry. Electrochemistry is an area of chemistry that can be used
for analytical purposes (e.g.
stripping electrolysis and polarography etc.) or to
investigate chemical reactions in solution (e.g.
cyclic voltammetry etc.).The electrochemical process involves electron transfer between electrodes and an electrolyte and results in
an oxidation/reduction processes (i.e.
‘redox’ reactions). In electrochemistry electrolytic ‘redox’ reactions involve the oxidation of one chemical group
and the simultaneous reduction of another. Electrochemistry
can also be employed as a concentration technique (e.g. the plating out of trace
concentrations of metals from solution for analysis).
